Breath before movement

Why every class here starts with five minutes of doing nothing at all.

The first five minutes of class are the same every week: lie down, close your eyes, and notice where your breath goes. Some people find this the hardest part.

It is there because the body cannot be rushed into paying attention. Five minutes of breathing turns the day off. After that, whatever we do with the arms and legs lands somewhere.

You cannot stretch a muscle that is busy protecting you.
